Canido’s Las Meninas map
“Las Meninas de Canido” are an example of how art can change the morphology of a forgotten urban area and restore hope to a city affected and punished by the crisis for many years. The artist Eduardo Hermida started in 2008 a pictorial action in order to draw attention to the state of neglect in which is the upper quarter and it becomes, with the involvement of neighbouring and other artists from different disciplines, an international benchmark in which old buildings are dressed with various interpretations of Velazquez’s picture.
Currently the quarter welcomes every day to curious, tourists and schoolchildren who come to know this authentic art gallery in which the abandoned walls become canvases and their streets into a cultural circuit for walks as if it were a museum.
